New Jersey Court Rules 5:6A governs child support (Appendix IX). New Jersey uses Income Shares with a high annual combined income cap of $187,200. Courts can order college contribution based on Newburgh v. Arrigo factors.
AGE When Does Child Support End in New Jersey?
Child support in New Jersey ends when the child turns 18 — Courts may order college contribution beyond 18 (Newburgh factors apply). Support also ends upon the child’s death, marriage or emancipation. Important: In most cases support does not stop automatically — you need a court order. Stopping payments without a court order creates arrears even after the child reaches the cutoff age.
